It was June 30, 1863 and two armies were about to meet at a small town in the green hills of south-central Pennsylvania called Gettysburg. On this day the fateful decision to converge on the town was made by General Robert E. Lee and his assembled staff including General James Longstreet. Having originally planned to meet at Harrisburg, the state capitol, the new strategy was made following a delay of information about the location of the federal troops. Once the information was delivered, Lee told the men in the grove, "Gentlemen, we will to move to Harrisburg, as we expected, but will go over to Gettysburg and see what General Meade is after." |
